Licensed Practical Nursing Programs
Practical nursing programs are offered at numerous technical centers and private vocational schools across Oklahoma. These programs prepare individuals to take the licensure examination to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN). A practical nursing program is approximately one year in length for full-time study, or longer for part-time study. LPNs may work in clinics, hospitals, home care, or long-term care settings. They work under the supervision of a registered nurse or a physician.

Baccalaureate Degree Programs
Bachelor’s degree nursing programs are designed to prepare an individual entering the nursing field to take the licensure examination to be a registered nurse (RN). A registered nurse who is prepared at the baccalaureate level has more advanced career opportunities than those with associate degrees, including the ability to advance in administrative, clinical and educational positions. Baccalaureate degree nursing programs are offered in university settings and generally take four years of full-time study with course work that includes general education and nursing courses. Those who have already obtained associate degrees can complete a bachelor’s degree in less time.

Advanced Practice Registered Nursing Degree Programs
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) must complete master’s or doctorate degree programs and specialized certification. In Oklahoma, APRNs can be licensed as certified nurse practitioners (APRN-CP), certified nurse midwife (APRN-CNM), clinical nurse specialist (APRN-CNS), or certified registered nurse anesthetist (APRN-CRNA). APRNs generally practice at a higher level of autonomy, working independently or in collaboration with physicians.
